To understand the Texas Holdem Poker game, you need to know the Lingo.
The main things that you will come across include:
Ante is the money you put into the pot before any player cards are dealt.
Bankroll is the total amount of money you have to play with.
Bluffing is making everyone think you have a better hand than you actually do.
These few terms are the basic lingo and are good enough to enable you make a start on the way to become an experienced player. The basics of poker are as above. If you learn them you will have a good idea of the game.
To get a firm grip on the rules for Texas Holdem Poker, it is better you become familiar with some of the terms used.
There are three main types of the game, and depending on the place, there may be slight changes in the rules.
Fixed Limit Texas Holdem is a game where the betting is fixed within a certain range. For example, the betting is limited through ten to twenty dollars range. That means that the bets are limited to ten dollars in the pre-flop and flop and to twenty dollars in the turn and river.
Pot Limit Texas Holdem also has a form of limited betting; however it is not fixed before the game. The limit is according to the amount currently in the pot. As the pot increases, the betting limit increases.
No Limit Texas Holdem: Here the betting is as per the willingness of the player. There are no fixed betting limits in this game. Mostly experienced players with high bankrolls play this game.
Terminology: Some of the terminology in the game include flop, pre-flop, river, turn, dealer button, all in, raise, fold, check, call, blind bet etc.
Blind bet: This is the bet made by players before the cards are put. Normally this is done by the first two players on the left of the dealer.
Call: A player matches the bet of another player. Make sure not to make silly donkey calls.
Check: When a player checks he does not want to place a bet. A check can only take place only if there are no other bets in the round. Even though the player chooses not to bet, he can still stay in the game.
Fold: The player quits the current game but will play in the next.
Raise: To raise simply means youre betting more than the last player.
All In: The player is betting everything he has on hand.
Dealer Button: The dealer button decides who the current dealer is and who has to place the blind bets. After each round it is passed in a clockwise direction to the next player
Pre-Flop: This is the first round of Texas Holdem Poker. The dealer gives each player two cards known as pocket cards.
Flop: This is the second round of Texas Holdem Poker. The first three communal cards are put face up on the table. These communal cards care used by the players to create the best five card hands.
Turn: This is the third round of Texas Holdem Poker. A fourth communal card is placed face up on the poker table.
River: This is the last round of Texas Holdem Poker. A fifth communal card is placed face up on the poker table.
