Tournament Payouts
Payouts are different at every tournament. There is no standardized payout chart. Tournament hosts use any percentage they feel will appeal to players. Just be sure that all the players know and are in agreement on the percentages before tournament play starts.
Another potential problem that should be settled before a tournament starts is how to handle payouts in a situation where two players are eliminated playing the same hand. For example, if the final hand has three players going into it and the outcome has one player eliminating both opponents, how will the second place winner and third place winner be determined? Two common methods are:
- Award the second and third place finishes to the players based on the size of their chip total prior to playing the hand. The player who started the hand with the larger chip total would get second place while third place would go to the player who started out with less chips.
- Share the prize equally between the two players. The second and third place prizes would be added together and then both players would be entitled to one half of this total. While this method fairly splits the prize money it does have one drawback, the second and third place ranking is not established should this be important.
It is not unusual for tournament players to make "deals" to resolve problems that affect them. As an example, if there was no rule dealing with the elimination of two players at once and the situation arose, the players themselves will often think out loud and come to an agreement that they feel is fair.
